About
Greystoke Castle
Combine this location and terrain with the best outdoor activity and hospitality
team in the business and you have Greystoke Castle – and your opportunity
for a truly memorable event.
History of Greystoke
Castle
In 1069, Llyulph de Greystoke was re-granted his land by the Normans, following
their conquest, and built a wooden tower surrounded by a pale (or pele). Eighteen
generations of de Greystokes lived in it until 1346, when King Edward III
gave permission to castellate the building and the Castle proper was created.
Greystoke Castle
Ethos
The words ‘client’ and ‘customer’ are not part of
the Greystoke Castle vocabulary. We entertain guests.
Conservation
Company policies on everything from recycling and waste management to off-road
access and wild life conservation actively encourage the greenest of attitudes
among all our staff. A love of our landscape is part of the job.
Safety
You can be confident that we have trained our team, tested our equipment and
assessed the risks associated with your programme of activities – and
we can provide the evidence and paperwork to guarantee your peace of mind.
Activities
at Greystoke Castle
Whether you prefer to choose one of our existing packaged or themed days or
a bespoke event, we will make suggestions to guide and assist you based on
the size of your group, their enthusiasms and abilities and your expectations
and needs.
Driving
Driving activities at Greystoke Castle.
Adult
Quads
Enjoy the thrills of a quad trek across our 3000 acres of rugged upland terrain
on 330cc automatic 4-wheel drive quads.
Mini
Quads
Our mini quads offer less confident or younger riders the opportunity to enjoy
the thrills and exhilaration of a quad trek but on a less daunting scale.
4x4 Driving
Take a challenging lesson behind the wheel of a Land Rover 110, manoeuvring
up steep ascents, driving through running water and down muddy slopes, facing
up to the challenges of our 3000-acre estate.
Reverse
Steer / Blindfold Driving
Our reverse steer and similar driving activities throw guests into a disorientating
world where the steering goes the wrong way and the driver needs to rely on
someone else giving the instructions and directions.
Rally
Karts
Our guests frequently use the rally karts as a background activity in support
of another motorised strand. To increase the level of skill required, we fit
these machines with slick rear tyres, turning ‘getting into a tail spin’
into exciting reality.
Quad
Obstacles
Using the mini-quads, you will be taught to ride the machines and given some
practice. You will then be asked to complete an obstacle course of ramps,
see-saws, off-set see-saws, rattles and precision-driving challenges.
Clay
Shooting
Try our sporting clay targets at the Shooting Ground, ranging from driven
grouse through high pheasant to settling duck and springing teal. All our
traps are automatic and radio-controlled and we can vary the demands based
on your needs.
Musket
Shooting
For those for whom silence is not quite so golden, we offer black powder shooting.
We use replica muskets that produce a vastly satisfying boom with lots of
smoke but no recoil.
Air Rifles
/ Rifle Shooting
Our rifles are light and powerful, have no recoil, and are very quiet thanks
to the silencer. They can also be reloaded using just finger and thumb. This
means that there is nothing to distract you from sheer accuracy, which is
what good rifle shooting is all about.
Archery
For centuries, the English longbow and the English bowman were a battle-winning
combination and archery at Greystoke Castle continues this tradition, offering
a true test of skills and concentration.

Falconry
You will be able to don a gauntlet and handle these magnificent birds while
learning much about their habits and habitats.
Fly Casting
Our fishing instructors will take you through the art of casting a fly and
accompany you to the water's edge to provide guidance and encouragement as
you sample the delight of fly-fishing.

Skills
- Training
We define skills as something learned and talents as natural gifts. We recruit
talented people and train them in the appropriate skills. We are also delighted
to extend this training to guests who have a particular aim in mind.
Lantra Courses
Not only are all our instructors LANTRA qualified in the relevant skills,
but we can also deliver LANTRA courses to others who wish to become qualified.
4x4 Driver
There is nothing magic about off-road driving skills, but they are a world
different from the usual on-road skills. Some theory and vehicle mechanics,
basic techniques and off-road logic are taught in the first half day on our
purpose-built, all-weather, off-road course.
4x4 Professional
User
This two day course takes the off road skill much further. Both theory and
vehicle mechanics are amplified and the driving skills are more demanding.
4x4 Instructor
Candidates must additionally gain qualifications in first-aid and methods
of instruction. Those who successfully complete this course are committed
to an annual up-dating session and a quality assurance scheme in order to
retain their qualification.
Trailer
Handling
A two-day course covering trailers and the law, the inspection, servicing
and loading of trailers and both on and off road trailer handling.
Expedition
Preparation
We can run courses combining any combination of: Vehicle selection and preparation,
Driving techniques, Recovery and self-recovery, Equipment selection, Security,

Development
- Training
The effort it takes to stand still is increasing all the time and individuals,
teams and organisations needs to anticipate, react and develop. Our Greystoke
approach to training rests on three pillars: Disparity – since no two
people are exactly the same and neither are any two problems, so too do solutions
need to be tailor-made. Common sense – there are usually common sense
solutions to commonplace problems and we aim to help you to find them. Humour
– humour is always the shortest distance between two people and we aim
to inject fun and exhilaration into all our activities and events. Learning
is always easier when led by enjoyment.
Armageddon
Exercise Armageddon is a powerful and highly flexible development training
tool that can be adapted to all abilities and objectives – from fun
to serious challenge.
Gulag
This is one of the more complex team exercises. The team have to escape from
a gulag, using the limited equipment provided. They also have to take all
the equipment with them so as not to alert the guards to their means of escape.
Flying
Buttress
This is a two-part exercise. The first phase is an exercise in timely and
accurate communication, during which teams gather the equipment necessary
to build a full-scale bridge and develop the construction plan. The second
phase is a demanding team task to get the bridge built to specification and
on time.
